High Grade Replicas vs Super Clones – Two Completely Different Levels

To be honest, this is one of the most common misunderstandings I have encountered over the past few years. High grade replicas and super clones differ significantly in workmanship, movement, materials, and lifespan. The price difference is also at least double. Buying the wrong one basically means wasting your money.

A high grade replica sits in the middle tier of the replica watch market. The appearance is usually around 70 to 80 percent similar to the genuine watch. It looks fine from a distance, but the differences become obvious when viewed up close. The movement is usually a generic Seagull 2813 or Japanese Miyota 8215. The case is mostly made of 316L stainless steel, the bezel insert is aluminum, the lume is weak, and water resistance is poor.

Prices are round $300 or $400.

A super clone is at the top of the market.

It uses a Dandong super clone movement, a 904L stainless steel case made from the same grade of steel as the genuine watch, sapphire crystal, and a ceramic bezel insert. The weight is usually only two to three grams different from the genuine watch, which is basically impossible to notice without using a scale.

Prices are generally around $500 to $1200.

The Movement Is the Biggest Difference

The movement determines how long a watch can be worn, how accurate it is, and whether the winding feel is correct.

The difference between high grade replicas and super clones is greatest in the movement.

This factor alone creates a huge gap between the two.

High Grade Replica Movements

High grade replica Rolex watches usually use generic 2813 or Miyota 8215 movements.

These movements are inexpensive and structurally completely different from genuine Rolex movements. Their thickness is also different, which can make the watch case thicker than the genuine version.

The winding feel is different as well.

Power reserve is usually around 38 to 40 hours, and a daily deviation of 15 to 20 seconds is considered normal. Some lower quality examples can deviate by more than 30 seconds per day.

The main problem with generic movements is their relatively short lifespan. After one or two years of use, movement components may begin to wear, causing unstable timekeeping.

Super Clone Movements

Top grade super clones use integrated clone movements made in Dandong. Their construction is designed to closely reproduce the genuine movement rather than simply fitting a generic movement inside the case.

Submariners use the DD3235 with a date function or the DD3230 without a date. Power reserve is around 70 hours, and daily deviation can generally be controlled within 5 to 8 seconds.

Daytonas use the Dandong 4131, with fully functional chronograph features. Unlike older generic movements where the chronograph was sometimes only decorative, the chronograph functions actually work.

GMT models use the Dandong 3285, reproducing the GMT function of the genuine watch.

These clone movements have been tested to last more than five years.

I have been selling VS Factory Submariners for seven or eight years, and the repair return rate has been around 1 percent. Movement quality has become very stable.

You Can Feel the Difference in Materials Immediately

Put a high grade replica Submariner and a top grade super clone Submariner next to each other.

You do not need a magnifying glass.

You can tell the difference just by touching them.

Steel

High grade replicas usually use 316L stainless steel, while top grade super clones use 904L stainless steel.

904L is the same grade of steel used on genuine Rolex watches. It offers much stronger corrosion resistance than 316L and produces a more refined shine after polishing.

Polished 316L tends to look slightly gray and dull. When placed next to a genuine watch, the difference is obvious.

316L can also become darker and oxidized after long term wear, while 904L can generally maintain its appearance for three or four years with little noticeable change.

Crystal

Most high grade replicas use mineral glass, which has relatively low scratch resistance. After six months of regular wear, scratches can easily appear.

Top grade super clones use sapphire crystal with a hardness of 9, second only to diamond.

Under normal use, it is very difficult to scratch.

This difference is extremely noticeable in everyday wear.

Bezel

High grade replica Submariners usually use aluminum bezel inserts, and the color can fade over time.

Last month, a customer from New York brought in a high grade green Submariner he had bought previously and compared it with a VS Factory version from me.

After only four months of wear, the green bezel on his watch had already started turning slightly yellow.

VS Factory uses a ceramic bezel insert. The bezel produces a crisp clicking sound when rotated and normally does not fade even after four or five years.

How Big Is the Difference in Weight?

Weight is one of the most obvious indicators.

You do not need any professional equipment. You can feel the difference simply by holding the watch.

High grade replica Submariners usually weigh around 130 to 140 grams.

Because 316L stainless steel has a lower density than 904L, and because some components may use alloy instead of solid steel, the entire watch feels noticeably lighter.

It simply does not feel quite right in the hand and lacks the solid feel of a genuine Rolex.

A VS Factory top grade 126610LN Submariner weighs around 153 grams, compared with 155 grams for the genuine watch, a difference of only two grams.

A stainless steel Daytona weighs around 142 grams, compared with 145 grams for the genuine watch, a difference of three grams.

Without using a scale, this difference is almost impossible to feel.

When a top grade super clone reaches this level, it is clearly in a completely different category from an ordinary high grade replica.

Differences in Price and Lifespan

High grade replica Rolex watches cost around $300 to $400.

They may look inexpensive, but in reality they are not necessarily good value.

Generic movements often start developing problems after one or two years. Aluminum bezels fade, mineral crystals get scratched, and water resistance can fail.

Overall lifespan is usually around one to two years, while some cheaper versions may develop problems after only six months.

When you calculate the actual monthly cost of ownership, they are not necessarily cheap.

Top grade super clones cost around $500 to $1200.

They cost more upfront, but Dandong clone movements can last more than five years. Ceramic bezels do not fade easily, sapphire crystals resist scratches, and 904L stainless steel resists oxidation.

With normal wear, overall quality may show little noticeable decline even after four or five years.

When calculated on a monthly basis, the cost of ownership can actually be lower than that of a high grade replica.

To be honest, many customers buy a high grade replica first, wear it until it breaks, and then come back to buy a top grade super clone.

They often say they should have bought the better version from the beginning.

I personally see three or four customers like this every month.

Three Quick Ways to Tell the Difference

The first is weight.

A VS Factory Submariner weighs around 153 grams, while a high grade replica usually weighs around 130 to 140 grams.

Put it on an electronic scale and the difference becomes obvious.

A difference of more than ten grams can also be felt in the hand. If the watch feels unusually light, something is probably wrong.

The second is the bezel.

A ceramic bezel usually produces a crisp clicking sound and has clear tactile feedback when rotated.

An aluminum bezel usually sounds duller and provides weaker feedback.

You can also lightly tap it with your fingernail. Ceramic generally produces a sharper sound.

The third is the movement.

Pull out the crown and feel the different positions.

The Dandong DD3235 has two clearly defined adjustment positions for the date and time.

Generic movements often feel less precise when the crown is pulled out, with less clearly defined positions.

On the no date DD3230, the first crown position goes directly into time setting mode, without an unused position.

When a generic date movement is installed in a no date watch, the first position often becomes a useless ghost position.
